Steven Johnson will be attending the 2-day event at Beth Noveck's NYU Gov Lab (Governance Lab) on Citizen Engagement. For movement-building, it’s important to stress the commonalities between these different (Peer Progressive) networks, but for practical application, we need to study the distinctions. And we need to avoid the easy assumption that decentralized, peer-based approaches will always outperform centralized ones. One of the key values of peer progressivism is intellectual and professional diversity; groups that draw on different conceptual frameworks consistently outperform more single-minded groups. I’ve tried to live by those values in my own work -- diving into long-form historical studies, covering contemporary science or popular culture, building web platforms -- and the Gov Lab has been conceived in very much the same spirit.
in cynical terms, this can refer to a Start Up designed to be "flipped" to a buyer/investor (e.g. IPO) before they figure out that the Business Model doesn't scale/work. (more)
not just Political Engagement, but Collective Action
Dave Winer announces his new Start Up. In December I started a new company, Small Picture, with Kyle Shank, a 28-year-old JavaScript developer. We've created a new product, Little Outliner (OutLining). It runs in-browser. It's a continuation of the thread started by my desktop outliner products. It currently uses HTML-5 Local Storage. (more)
David Weinberger in reaction to Clay Shirky (2003-07-06-ShirkyGroupWorstEnemy) and social networking services. So, if groups are important but are under-served by Internet and if the Internet lets us innovate on the edges, then there's a market opportunity for group services... Friendster asks me to be binary about one of the least binary relationships around. I'm not suggesting that Friendster made a poor design decision. I'm suggesting that there is no good design decision to be made here (2003-07-25-FoafRelationships)... Perhaps groups can't write a constitution until they've already entangled themselves in thick, messy, ambiguous, open-ended relationships. Without that thicket of tangles, the group doesn't know itself well enough to write a constitution.... We all know how ugly constitutional discussions can get. In order to have such a charged conversation, the group needs a web of good will.

Glenn Reynolds quotes Jonah Goldberg's offer to switch pieces of the Media Bias pie (Game Theory). In return, we'd like the keys to the executive bathrooms at ABC, CBS and NBC, please... In other words, talk to me about how we've won the Culture War when Dinesh D Souza wins a MacArthur Grant and Maya Angelou has to blog about it because no one at the Ny Times will run her pieces. (This is commentary on Brian Anderson's piece.)

A discussion on "how to WebLog-s need to evolve?" with Anil Dash, Matt Haughey, Meg Hourihan, Paul Bausch, and EvHead. It seems like some of the basic elements of the form, such as comments, have been stuck in a model that doesn't work very well to encourage quality responses and also doesn't fit the way people do things socially online these days. Oddly, a blog comment isn't even as good a social object as a photo. Some overlapping ideas... (more)

Fred Wilson notes that the OPM situation for Consumer Web (B2C) Start Up-s is rough right now: 1) the consumer web has matured... 2) the consumer is moving from desktop/web to Mobile/app... 3) the momentum/late stage investors have moved from consumer to Enterprise (B2B). (more)
